Games That ‘Secret Level’ Should Adapt Next

Secret Level is an upcoming adult animated anthology series from the creators of Love Death + Robots. Releasing on December 10th, 2024 on Amazon Prime Video, each episode will be set in the worlds of different video games. The games that are set to be adapted are Armored Core, Concord, Crossfire, Dungeons & Dragons, Exodus, Honor of Kings, Mega Man, New World: Aeturnam, Pac-Man, PlayStation, Sifu, Spelunky, The Outer Worlds 2, Unreal Tournament, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

It makes one wonder what other games would work for an episode of Secret Level if it were to continue after these 15 planned episodes. Below are some that could be fun to see in that style.

Note: Since “PlayStation” is one of the IPs being adapted, it’s hard to know how they’re going about that or which PlayStation games will appear in the episode. Because of this, PlayStation games will not be on this speculative list.

Half-Life

These creators excel at exploring interesting sci fi worlds and ideas. It goes without saying that Half-Life is one of the most influential and well-known sci fi video games out there. The tale of Gordon Freeman and Black Mesa would be easy to adapt into a TV show script, but still lends itself to being explored even further. Similarly, Half-Life 2 and Portal could also be tackled to expand things even further.

Dig Dug

This may sound like an odd choice, but Pac-Man is being adapted, having more arcade classics represented would be a lot of fun. It also has an interesting premise for a sci-fi short film. Digging down to explore what’s under the Earth’s surface, or what’s under the surface of an alien planet, only to find what horrifying creatures lurk there could lead to a fun story. Of course, the protagonist would have to use their trusty pump to blow some of them up.

Worms

The Worms games are cartoony but filled with violence and war. An animation featuring worms from various lands going to war could involve plenty of Looney Tunes-style slapstick and over-the-top action. It would also provide an opportunity for dark comedy and thought-provoking commentary on war.

Stray

A game that caught a lot of attention in recent years was Stray. It tells an interesting tale involving a cat exploring a futuristic city filled with robots and mutant bacteria. It’s both cute and intriguing. Plus, the visuals in an episode dedicated to Stray could be incredible. Who wouldn’t want to watch the adventures of an adorable little kitty cat as they travel through a unique environment?

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley may just seem like a farming sim to anyone who hasn’t played it, but it’s so much more than that. There are also townsfolk to get to know and form relationships with over time, as well as thousands of monsters, slimes, zombies, ghosts, and all sorts of terrors lurking just beneath the town. Friendly neighbors try to live their lives and have their drama play out all while certain doom is so close to their peaceful homes. There’s certainly an easy story to tell with this information in mind. This could prove to be an entertaining fantasy tale.

Nights Into Dreams

What do our dreams look like? Where do our dreams come from? How would others perceive our dreams? These questions could all be explored in a Secret Level episode based on Nights Into Dreams. The game follows two teenagers as they venture into a world where all dreams take place. There, they meet Nights, an exiled Nightmaren, who helps them save both the dream world and the real world. A fantastical exploration into our dreams sounds perfect for a show like Secret Level.

Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares is a modern, mysterious fairy tale that is wonderfully spooky. The Maw is an underwater fortress where monstrous guests come to feast on imprisoned children. Six will do anything to escape, including giving in to her darkest desires. The game has plenty of creative designs that would look incredible if adapted into an animation, and it has a lot to say about the human psyche and morality. This one would be a darker episode for sure.

The Wonderful 101

The Wonderful 101 is a creative and action-packed superhero game with a unique sci-fi twist. The UN has a massive team of superheroes called the Wonderful 100 take on an alien threat known as the Geathjerk Federation that have invaded the planet. There’s superhero action, futuristic tech, and an opportunity for political commentary and themes. An adaptation of it could be both wildly entertaining and smart.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an emotional tale with beautiful imagery. A young spirit guide uses her magical abilities to help deceased people move on from the physical world to the spirit world. However, when one spirit starts corrupting the forest, she needs to figure out how to help him move on in order to stop the decay of the land. It has the potential for interesting character interactions, amazing visuals, exciting action, and an emotional story.

Borderlands

The Borderlands video games are some of the biggest and best sci-fi experiences in gaming. Vault Hunters travel from all over the galaxy to track down a Vault and any treasures found inside. There’s plenty of fun, wacky characters, fascinating creatures, explosive weapons, hilarious humor, and heartfelt storytelling. The folks behind Secret Level could probably do a lot with Borderlands. Plu, there needs to be some sort of redemption after the movie.
