The Classic ‘Hellboy’ Movies Still Need a Finale

Hellboy is a demonic comic book character from Dark Horse Comics that has a darker edge than most traditional superheroes. For that, along with excellent character and story writing, he has become a fan-favorite among comic book readers. This, of course, led to movie adaptations. The first of which starred Ron Perlman and lasted for two films.

Both 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy 2: The Golden Army were fantastic. Guillermo del Toro’s directing was as phenomenal as always. The traditional and digital effects were all spectacular. The actors all brought their A game. Even though the movies were focused on demons, monsters, secret organizations, and superheroes, they told incredibly emotional stories. Unfortunately, though, the franchise didn’t continue after the second movie.

Not only were they great movies, but the story calls for more as well. The Golden Army ends with setting up an interesting direction for a third movie to go in, but the next installment never came. It all just ended rather abruptly leaving things up in the air. With The Golden Army being even better than the first movie, one would think that a third would be a guarantee, but that was not the case.

Instead, the film franchise was rebooted with 2019’s Hellboy, starring David Harbour. This new movie essentially killed any hope of seeing a proper Hellboy 3 that fans were hoping for. It was also not nearly as well received as the previous adaptations. Harbour gave an excellent performance, but it fell flat in just about every other way.

A new, lower budget movie, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man is on the way. This time Jack Kesy will play the titular heroic demon. The makeup on Hellboy looks much worse than what was used twenty years ago, but they seem to be leaning more into the horror side of Hellboy, which might be a good move to make. That being said, regardless of how good a new Hellboy movie is, there will be people who refuse to give it a chance because of how dissatisfied they are with the lack of ending for the original film series. If anything, the movie studio might want to wrap up that first live action outing before moving on because of that.

Hellboy 3 deserves to finally be made. Fans have been craving it for quite a long time, the story calls for it, and other adaptations just aren’t cutting it. It’s quite sad that it will likely never happen.
