12 Nerdy Movies With Summer Vibes

It’s summer time! The sun is hot, the water is cool, and air conditioners are buzzing. People are taking much needed breaks from work, school, and the overall hustle and bustle of life to enjoy beaches, summer camps, and much-deserved vacations. To help get into that summer mood, here are some nerdy movies with strong summer vibes.

Aquaman

Aquaman, and its sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, are comic book superhero flicks that follow the king of the ocean as he fights to save the world. From undersea battles with fantastical creatures to the beautiful, seaside views of Sicily, these movies will make any comic book fan want to go swimming.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever introduced Marvel’s king of the seas to the MCU, Namor. Wakanda itself looks to be an absolutely gorgeous vacation spot. The film also features plenty of underwater shots and a fight that takes place on a gorgeous beach and on the ocean’s surface. It’s an incredible installment in the MCU, and it’s hard not to want to take a dip in the water every time it’s on screen.

The Goonies

As a kid, what’s a better way to spend summer vacation than hanging out with your best buds? The Goonies features just that, as well as the friend group hunting for pirate treasure and running from a murderous crime family. It’s all done to save their homes in a beach-side town. Swinging from ropes to launch yourself into water is a fantastic summer pass time, but it can also prove useful when dodging thieves and giant octopuses.

Avatar: The Way of Water

We all know someone who doesn’t just enjoy swimming, but they want to be one with the water and even swim alongside the sea creatures. Avatar: The Way of Water is the perfect movie for them. It may take place on an alien planet, but it gives us a chance to learn about a variety of sea life, and it puts the importance of oceans and the life within them on a pedestal. Let’s hope your family can travel to some tropical oceanfront this summer like Jake Sully’s family (but hopefully without needing to because you’re being hunted).

Jaws

Ironically, Jaws is such an effective film that it made people want to avoid going in the water when it was initially released. However, it is a seafaring tale that helped define modern movies. If anything, it’s also a solid warning on how to stay safe on your summer vacation, which is always helpful. It also has one of the most iconic beach scenes in movie history, so it’s hard not to feel the summer vibes from this one.

Waterworld

Waterworld is like Mad Max if the oceans swallowed the planet. Most of the other movies on this list have characters going to the beach or summer camp, but this one has the characters on the water at all times. From jet skiing to sailing, sunburned characters take part in some fun summertime activities throughout this film, even if they’re doing so while fighting for their lives.

Ponyo

Speaking of the world being swallowed by the ocean, Ponyo is a positively delightful Studio Ghibli film. As a goldfish leaves to the surface world, befriends a human boy, and transforms into a human herself, they go on the boat ride of a lifetime. The beautiful imagery of undersea environments and sea critters is something to be admired. The environmentalist themes will hopefully show folks that they shouldn’t be littering while they’re on their summer vacations.

Jurassic Park

Just about the entire film of Jurassic Park takes place on a gorgeous tropical island. Sure, the island is overrun by hungry dinosaurs looking for human-sized snacks, but it still looks like a solid vacation spot. On top of that, the whole series is about opening a theme park, and going to theme parks is one of the most fun things to do during the summer.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Each of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies offer brilliant tropical landscapes and ocean waves worth taking a dip in. As the pirates are battling it out, it’s hard not to appreciate the vacation-like environments. It all makes one want to be a pirate just for the sake of catching some sun.

Friday the 13th (and Other Summer Camp Slashers)

Friday the 13th, as well as plenty of other slashers like Sleepaway Camp, are all about going to summer camp. Attending one as a camper or working at one as a counselor is something that many people have experienced over the summer. These flicks are sure to help them relive their summer camp days, but y’know, minus all the psychopathic murderers.

Porco Rosso

Porco Rosso may focus on anti-sexist themes and war, but it also features a protagonist that loves relaxing on a beach and enjoying the sunshine. You can practically smell the salt water as the characters soar over the ocean in their fighter planes. Despite its heavy themes, it’s still a lighthearted watch, making it perfect for relaxing on a summer night. Plus, Michael Keaton voices a talking pig in the English dub, and who wouldn’t enjoy that?

Moana

Disney’s Moana is a fantasy epic with gods and monsters on the high seas. The whole film screams “summer.” Even the water is an actual character. After you watch this movie, you’ll be humming all the catchy tunes while you relax by the pool.
