Blumhouse Productions is known for producing hit horror movies like M3GAN, The Black Phone, The Invisible Man, Paranormal Activity, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Insidious, and many more. However, they recently announced the start of Blumhouse Games, in which they will also be publishing video games. At 2024’s Summer Game Fest, they announced their first six games, being Fear the Spotlight, Grave Seasons, Crisol: Theater of Idols, Project C, The Simulation, and Sleep Awake.
With Blumhouse adding video games to their publication library, it makes one wonder what other movie studios should follow suit. There are other niche production companies that would likely find huge success by taking in a similar approach to Blumhouse. Here are some that could work especially well.
A24

A24 is a powerhouse in independent film. With the likes of Ex Machina, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Past Lives in their ever-growing library, they’ve had a massive influence on contemporary arthouse films. They’re more willing to work with indie filmmakers than most major studios.
A24 could give Annapurna Interactive a run for their money (or even better, partner with them) and become a go-to publisher for some of the most unique indie games around. Indie video games are more prominent than ever, so it might be a wise decision for A24 to take advantage of that.
Studio Ghibli

Studio Ghibli is famous for creating some of the most beautiful anime films around. Movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl’s Moving Castle all feature breath-taking imagery and memorable stories, and contain much more meaning than what’s on the surface.
Because of this, they’d be the perfect studio to handle artsy games similar to the likes of Journey, Okami, or Shadow of the Colossus. Games like these focus on using brilliant artwork to tell meaningful stories, which is exactly what Studio Ghibli excels at.
87North Productions

87North Productions is known for producing some of the best modern action movies, like John Wick, Bullet Train, Violent Night, and Atomic Blonde. These films tell fantastic and grounded stories while having over-the-top action with well-choreographed martial arts combat and exciting gunplay.
There’s absolutely room for things like this to exist in the realm of video games as well. Close range battles with tight controls and creative combos mixed with solid shooting mechanics would make for some fun games, and topping them off with intriguing stories would make it all even better.
Monkeypaw Productions

Blumhouse may specialize in horror, but they certainly don’t have a monopoly on it. Founded by Jordan Peele, Monkeypaw Productions has been gradually taking over the world of horror movies and breathing new life into the genre. Films like Get Out, Us, Wendell & Wild, and Nope take horror ideas and play with them in new ways.
Because Monkeypaw Productions has become synonymous with modern horror, it would be perfect for them to start publishing horror video games as well. Gamers everywhere would jump at the chance to see what a studio like Monkeypaw would do with games. Jordan Peele is partnering with Hideo Kojima for an upcoming game known as OD, so perhaps that will give us a glimpse into what games would feel like under Monkeypaw.
