Sega Needs To Revisit Chao Garden

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are still some of the best games in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise. This can of course be attributed to the interesting stories, several playable characters, and fun gameplay mechanics. That being said, the Chao Garden game mode also plays a huge role in what makes them so great.

Visiting the Chao Garden was an absolute high point of those games, which is saying something considering how fantastic they are to begin with. Chao Garden was a gamemode that allowed players to take a break from platforming, searching for Chaos Emeralds, and battling robots to take care of their adorable Chao companions. In a peaceful garden environment, players got the chance to hatch, feed, play with, and pet the cute other-worldly creatures. There were even minigames for your Chao to compete in, like races and karate.

Throughout the “standard” portions of the Sonic Adventure gameplay, you could collect little animals to then use in the Chao Garden. These animals were used to help modify and customize your Chao’s appearance and their stats for the minigames. You could give them the physical features of gorillas, parrots, rabbits, and other creatures. The Chao could even become good or evil, and transform to match their alignment, depending on how they’re treated.

Since their debut in these games, the Chao have been seen throughout the franchise. Cream the Rabbit always has her Chao companion with her, which she named Cheese. Chao were playable in the multiplayer game modes of the Sonic Adventure 2 rerelease. They’ve also been seen in Sonic Shuffle, Sonic Rivals 2, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, and other games, but in much smaller roles in each of them. Unfortunately, none of these other games feature Chao Garden or anything that even remotely resembles it.

Since the popular game mode has stopped appearing in games, it has become the number one most requested thing from the Sonic community. The folks over at Sega and Sonic Team could have found a way to implement it into Sonic Frontiers, the latest mainline 3D Sonic game, but they decided not to. It’s like they’re ignoring what the fans want.

There are plenty of ways they could actually bring it back. The next Sonic game could offer the mode like Sonic Adventure did, but maybe with more minigames and more customizability. They could even develop a standalone Chao Garden game with even deeper gameplay than what just a side game mode might offer. Even just a Chao Garden mobile app would suffice. Let us take care of our Chao on our phones. That’s something that would be a massive hit.

But alas, there is so sign of Chao Garden making any sort of comeback. Hopefully they do give the fans what they’ve been clambering for in the near future.
