2019’s Joker took both comic book fans and moviegoers by storm and even won Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for Best Actor. Now, the follow-up film, Joker: Folie à Deux, is on the way soon. A teaser trailer was released to give fans a taste of what they can expect in the upcoming sequel. It’s just a teaser, but it does offer some juicy details. Let’s take a look at them below.
Joker: Folie à Deux | Official Teaser Trailer
Arkham Asylum
The first movie ended with Arthur Fleck being put in Arkham Asylum. Judging from the teaser trailer, this movie will focus on Arthur’s life at the Asylum. With Arkham being one of the primary locations in Batman comics for several decades, it’ll be cool to see more of it in this universe. It makes one wonder how it will be tackled in this version of the lore. It’s hard to tell how much of the story will actually take place at Arkham, but a full movie primarily taking place there would be a lot of fun.
Harley Quinn
The teaser gives audiences their first glimpses of Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. In the source material, Harley was a psychologist who worked at Arkham Asylum before falling in love with the Joker. From there, she became his love interest and henchwoman. Eventually she grew into the role of a standalone villain, anti-hero, and even full-blown hero. It’s quite obvious that this film will focus on Joker and Harley meeting and their relationship as love interests, which should be interesting since this somehow hasn’t been explored on the big screen yet. By the looks of it, their twisted romance will feel genuine in the movie.
We get to see what Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn attire and makeup look like and, while this is definitely a unique take on the lore like the first movie, it does match the spirit of her comic book/animated series getup. It’s a cool look that is sure to lead to plenty of cosplays and Halloween costumes.
What’s bizarre about her character in this teaser, though, is that Harley seems to be another patient at Arkham rather than being a psychologist. Why could that be? Why make that change to the character’s backstory?
Music
Something else of note in the teaser trailer is the music. Joker: Folie à Deux is being advertised as a musical, so the music choice is vital. The song used in the trailer is “What the World Needs Now is Love.” This classic love song tells us exactly what sort of vibe they’re going with this movie and its soundtrack, and it fits Joker and Harley quite well. The somewhat upsetting choice, though, is that this is planned to be a jukebox musical. This means that the songs will all be ones that exist, like in Glee or Mama Mia!. This movie could have given the world a dark, gothic soundtrack fitting of Gotham City, so this feels like a missed opportunity. Hopefully the song choices still work.

All In His Head?
Like much of the first movie, it looks like plenty of the story will take place in Aurthur’s head. Which parts will be in his mind is hard to say, but it looks like there will be some visual queues. His daydreams seem to be more colorful than what’s going on in the real world. A good look at this in the teaser is when the black umbrellas change to vibrant colors in the next shot. Interestingly enough, they’re the same colors as the game show curtain seen in the trailer, which might indicate the color scheme will be used throughout his dream sequences. There’s also a shot of Arthur running from his Joker self, which is almost definitely something he’s imagining unless it’s one of his adoring fans. It makes one wonder how much of the movie will actually be real.
Escape
The teaser does show the twisted pair escaping the confines of Arkham Asylum. As much as an Arkham Asylum-centered movie sounds fun, it’s hard not to feel excited to see the havoc the two of them will wreak on Gotham City. That being said, maybe it still does all take place within Arkham and any escape is actually just in his head.
He Still Has Followers
The first film showed Arthur obtaining quite a large following. Upon seeing some of the shots in this teaser trailer, it’s clear that he still has that following. They want him freed from Arkham, likely by any means necessary. Perhaps they’ll be the ones setting him and Harley free from Arkham, or maybe we’ll see them wreaking havoc in his honor. Either way, this following he has is sure to play an important part like it did in the original movie.
