Movies IllFonic Should Adapt Into an Asyemmetrical Video Game

IllFonic is the video game developer behind Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, Predator: Hunting Grounds, Friday: the Thirteenth: The Game, and the upcoming Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game. Clearly, they excel at creating asymmetrical horror games based on existing franchises. For those who aren’t aware, an asymmetrical game is one where the teams consist of different amounts of players, like Ghostbusters: Spirit Unleashed matches being 4v1.

Since IllFonic has had some success with this formula, it’s worth imagining what other movies would lend themselves to their style of asymmetrical gameplay in an adaptation. Here are just some movies that could possibly fit this gameplay formula.

Gremlins

Gremlins is the first movie that comes to mind for a game like this. One team controls the hordes of menacing Gremlins as they wreak havoc while the other plays as the humans trying to stop them. Of course, the Gremlins would be able to sabotage lights, electronic doors, and any other tech. The humans trying to open skylights or get the Gremlins into the sun would add an extra layer to their challenge. With the two movies and the Secrets of the Mogwai animated series, there are plenty of locations that would make for perfect maps. Gremlins already has a lot of similarities to Ghostbusters and Killer Klowns From Outer Space, so there’s no reason it shouldn’t work as well as they do.

The Goonies

The Goonies may not be a horror movie, but it would work just as well as anything else in IllFonic’s library. One team playing as the members of the Goonies (as well as Steph and Andy) while the other plays as the three Fratellis would fit the formula perfectly. The Goonies using their various gadgets and treasure-hunting gear while the Fratellis use their firearms would allow each team to have a unique feel to them. What’s especially interesting about this one is that, in this scenario, both teams would have the same goal. They would both be competing to find One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. This main detail would be enough to make this one stand out from the other games in IllFonic’s library.

Home Alone

This one also isn’t horror, and would allow for less players in a match, but would still lead to hours of entertainment. The two Wet Bandits vs. the lone Keving McCallister would make for some incredibly fun gameplay. The young Kevin setting up traps that Harry and Marv have to avoid as they hunt him down would perfectly recreate the iconic movie in video game form. The various houses and buildings from the gratuitous sequels could help add extra maps if needed. This holiday classic doesn’t need anymore forced sequels, but it could use a great multiplayer video game.

Saw

This one might be a little tougher to make fit into the asymmetrical game formula, but it’s worth the attempt. One player, as Jigsaw, would build traps for the other players who would then need to work together in order to escape. The question would be, though, what would the Jigsaw player be doing while the victims are solving his puzzles? Perhaps putting together games for the next room, and he has until they solve the first one to do it. This one would add a lot more mind games than the other options on the list, which could be a lot of fun.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

IllFonic and other developers who have tackled these sorts of games have already covered most classic horror icons. It’s time Freddy Krueger joins the fray. Obviously, the gameplay would take place in a dream realm so that his powers make sense. He’s able to do just about anything in a dream, so he would be especially fun to play as while he hunts down his victims. The group of players teaming up against Freddy would essentially feel like the Dream Warriors from the third film. It’s actually quite surprising this hasn’t been attempted yet.

Mars Attacks!

Ghostbusters and Killer Klowns From Outer Space have a certain level of wackiness to them. Another movie that captures that wackiness is Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks!. The aliens use a slew of gadgets and weapons throughout the film that would lead to some creative gameplay. The humans could either escape or fight back. The best strategy against the Martian invaders would obviously be the “Indian Love Call” song that instantly destroys them. Perhaps the aliens would be able to obtain the mech that’s seen in the movie as well. A Mars Attacks! video game would probably end up being the wildest game on this list. If it leads to a sequel or some other resurgence of the franchise, then it will be worth it.
