Franchises That Would Make For Great Trading Card Games

There are plenty of trading card games that have taken the world by storm, like Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and The Pokémon Trading Card Game. There have even been a surprising number of successful trading card games based on existing franchises, like Dragon Ball Collectible Card Game, Godzilla Card Game, One Piece Card Game, and the recent Disney Lorcana. After looking at the excitement around the likes of Lorcana, it’s hard not to think about what other franchises could easily be made into trading card games. Here are just a few that could be made into fun and unique TCGs.

Nintendo

It goes without saying that a Nintendo trading card game (that’s not Pokémon) would be a massive success. For one, Nintendo started off making playing cards back when they first originated. Outside of that, their video games are chock-full of iconic characters, power-ups, levels, weapons, vehicles, and other elements that would prove to be perfect source material for cards. From Super Mario and Samus to Fox MCloud and Kirby, each character coming equipped with their own unique abilities would allow every card to easily serve different functions in a deck.

PlayStation

Like Nintendo, PlayStation has a vast library of video games that are already loved by many who would flock to trading card versions of them. Kratos, Jak and Daxter, Sackboy, Parappa the Rapper, Aloy, Joel and Ellie, and countless other characters could easily be made into cards with fun and unique abilities. Various weapons and items, like the Blades of Chaos from God of War and the Peak Point Helmet from Ape Escape, could be used as cards to shake up the gameplay quite a bit. Who wouldn’t want to build a deck around the sneakiness of Sly Cooper or the pure aggression of Twisted Metal’s Sweet Tooth?

DC Comics

DC Comics does have Dual Force, which is a digital card game similar to Marvel Snap. However, it’s not quite as good and they could do well with an actual TCG that stands out from anything else. With classic characters who have been household names for several decades like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, as well as countless superheroes with incredible powers like Blue Beetle, Firestorm, and Zatanna, there’s no way a physical trading card game featuring these names could be a miss. It’s also worth noting that vehicles like the Batmobile and the Invisible Jet, as well as weapons like Green Arrow’s bow and Harley Quinn’s mallet, would all make for insanely fun cards. With decades’ worth of comic book art, the artwork on the cards is sure to be just as amazing.

Looney Tunes

The Looney Tunes have been blowing each other up, dropping anvils on each other, and beating each other up for a century now. Their slapstick and shenanigans have made their way into movies, TV series, video games, and comic books. It’s about time they all became part of a playable trading card game. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and other characters have all reached mascot status, plus there’s a slew of traps, tricks, and Acme-created weaponry that could all be used for cards. This is sure to be one of the wackiest and most violent TCG around, and it would undoubtedly be fun because of it.

Nicktoons

From Rugrats to The Loud House and everything in between, there’s a lot of variety in Nickelodeon’s animated series. Each and every one of them, whether it be CatDog, Invader Zim, or Avatar: The Last Airbender, is filled with fun characters, memorable moments, and well-known gags that could make for cards worth collecting. Nicktoons are known for their zaniness, and that’s something that could make for a unique card game. Obviously, slime would need to be implemented somehow. Perhaps it could be the equivalent of lands in Magic the Gathering or energy in The Pokémon Card Game.

Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network is in a similar boat as Nickelodeon. They have a long library of cartoons that have been adored by countless fans from all over the world, but they don’t always connect to each other. However, it’s a blast when they do crossover, whether it be in a commercial bumper or in a video game like Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion. A Cartoon Network crossover card game would be just as wildly entertaining as the shows they’ve made. Ed, Edd, and Eddy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory and everything else in their lineup all have a lot to offer in terms of what would actually make sense to use as cards. The cartoons can get wild, so cards should too.
