The World Needs the Next ‘The Dark Crystal’ Installment

The Dark Crystal is a 1982 dark fantasy film directed by Muppets creator Jim Henson and fellow Muppets icon Frank Oz. It followed the adventure of two Gelflings, Jen and Kira, and they set off to restore a powerful broken crystal to bring balance to the world of Thra and defeat the evil Skeksis. It’s a cult classic fantasy movie with phenomenal puppeteering and immersive worldbuilding. For years, it lived in people’s nostalgia alongside 1986’s Labyrinth.

A TV series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, released on Netflix in 2019 but was sadly canceled after a single season. This short-lived show focused on the events involving the Skeksis using the power of the Dark Crystal to destroy the Gelfling that led to how the world was in the original movie. It’s easily one of the greatest sequels of all time because it feels like its own story while expanding on what original fans already love. It’s about time the franchise expanded yet again. The world needs the next installment of The Dark Crystal.

While both the original movie and the prequel TV series are fantastic and dive pretty deep into this imaginative world, there’s plenty of the story that has yet to be seen. What happens to Rian, Deet, Brea, and their friends? What happens to Thra after the Dark Crystal is restored? How did the Skeksis rise to power in the first place after UrSkeks first separated? What was Thra like before the UrSkeks came and what is their world like? There are a lot of gaps left to be explored. Even the tie-in books don’t cover these elements of the story.

On top of needing questions to be answered, it’s also a creative and unique fantasy world worth diving deeper into. It’s simply a fun world to explore for any show, movie, or book. Plus, The Age of Resistance provided a look into what can be accomplished with updated puppeteering and traditional effects techniques and technology. Imagine what heights a future installment can reach in those departments.

The world of The Dark Crystal is absolutely stupendous. Let’s hope it doesn’t take decades to get to the next piece of the story like it did before.

  1. Definitely agree with you about this. Age of Resistance proved that puppetry is still a relevant style of cinematic entertainment with an engaging story to tell by expanding upon the original movie. Here’s to hoping that one day soon the story will be complete as to what happens to Rian, Brea, and Deet.
