The 10 Most Underrated Muppets

From Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy to Fozzie Bear and Gonzo, there are plenty of Muppets characters who’ve become household names. That being said, there are plenty of Muppets who are just as great who don’t get quite as much love. Let’s celebrate these often-forgotten icons by looking at the most underrated Muppets around.

Rowlf the Dog

It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t love Rowlf, and he’s one of the very first Muppets. His laid-back demeanor and deadpan humor allow him to stand out from the other characters, and he’s kind-hearted and always willing to give some handy advice. Despite all this, Rowlf is often shoved in the background of any major story. Even when he’s tagging along in some grand adventure, he’s just sort of there. This is an absolute injustice to this incredible character.

Uncle Deadly

Uncle Deadly may fall into a villainous role at times due to his creepy, dragon-like appearance, but he’s actually a super nice guy. He’s intelligent and well-spoken. He’s also an appreciator of the arts and has an eye for design. He’s gone from foe to friend, making him a Muppets character who has actually received an arc. Unfortunately, he’s only been used a handful of times since his 1976 debut, which is rather upsetting.

Big Mean Carl

Big Mean Carl has one of the wackiest Muppet designs and plenty of chaotic energy. He’s grumpy, he loves to eat everything in sight, and he’s always hilarious. Every scene he’s in, even if it’s just a quick, couple-second-long gag, is an absolute riot. No one seems to really pay attention to him, though. Poor Carl.

The Newsman

His name, or lack thereof, says it all. He serves as a parody of real-life news reporters, but the stories he reports on are absolutely bonkers. Despite the ridiculousness of the news stories, he delivers every line read with seriousness and professionalism. This character is comedy gold. Surely he’d be perfect for gags in more recent Muppets projects too.

Lew Zealand

Lew  Zealand is one of the most creative ideas for a Muppet character. He’s a clown who throws fish like boomerangs. What more could you want? He needs to be in the spotlight much more than he already is. He could easily be put into scenarios that allow his boomerang fish to be used in bigger and wackier ways. There may not be a ton they can do with him story-wise, but he’s always hilarious. Even if they don’t give him more screen time, he definitely needs to be shown more love by the fans.

Crazy Harry

Crazy Harry is the perfect character for those who love slapstick humor, violence, and mayhem. This expert on pyrotechnics and lover of explosions adds so much extra chaos to the already-chaotic Muppets. He’s been overlooked both by Muppets writers and fans over the years, but that needs to change. Whether he’s launching Gonzo through the air or destroying landmarks, every scene he’s in is a blast.

Sweetums

Sweetums is a massive, hulking monster, but he’s the sweetest guy around. He looks a bit scary, but he just wants to help his friends any way he can and be loved by everyone. He may not look it, but he also loves to sing and dance. This character is impossible to hate, but he seems to rarely come up in people’s “favorite Muppets” lists. That’s something that needs to change.

Bobo the Bear

Bobo may not be the bear that comes to mind when thinking about the Muppets, but he’s a great character. He’s an imposing guy, which is why he’s been on the villainous side more than once, but overall just a big dope. He’s easily amused, which just makes him more lovable. He just wants everyone to have a good day. Who wouldn’t want to give Bobo a big bear hug?

Walter

Walter is definitely an interesting one on this list. He made his debut in 2011’s The Muppets and has only made a couple of appearances since. He was great in his first movie, acting as part of the heart of it and having a lot of screen time. However, in more recent projects, he’s felt more shoehorned in, as if Disney doesn’t know what to do with him. This has caused a lot of fans to not like him very much. Even multiple guests on the What the Muppet podcast have expressed their distaste for the character.

Walter’s role after the 2011 film hasn’t been fully established, but it’s become a bit clear upon viewings of more recent Muppets content. Walter is to the Muppets what Green Arrow is to the Justice League. He’s joined this group of long-time, big-name television and movie stars. He’s a fresh faced, more human-like Muppet among these larger-than-life characters. His role is to keep them grounded. They’re people (well, Muppets) first, and superstars second. The moment in Muppets Most Wanted when he and Fozzie went looking for Kermit when no one else did really shined a light on what Walter represents. Let’s hope he continues to be represented that way.

Scooter

Scooter’s arguably one of the central Muppets, but he’s never quite as noticed as Animal or Gonzo. He’s always by Kermit’s side, and The Muppet Show wouldn’t have been able to function without him. He’s dorky but lovable, and often takes on the responsibilities that other Muppets can’t handle. Scooter is the one who keeps order (if there is any) among the Muppets. He’s a fun and important character who gets overlooked far too frequently.
