X-Men: The Animated Series is easily one of the greatest superhero cartoons of all time. It ran for 5 seasons throughout the 90s, but alas, it came to an end like all things do. Thankfully, the series is finally making a comeback with X-Men ‘97, which will be released on Disney+. As fans prepare for the return of such an excellent series, a trailer has been released showcasing what this continuation will offer. Let’s take a look at the biggest details seen throughout the trailer.
90’s Throwback
They’re clearly embracing the nostalgic 90’s throwback that this is. This is seen with the CRT TV and VHS tapes in the opening shots of the trailer. They want to make it clear that this show still takes place in the 90s and that they want to establish that they’re target audience is primarily us older folks who grew up with the classic cartoon. That being said, it’ll likely be great for anyone to binge the earlier episodes to get caught up for these newer ones. The nostalgia of it all should be a blast, though.
Picks Up Where the Classic Left Off
This series is picking up right where the previous one left off. Charles Xavier is dying and his beloved students inherit his dream of a future in which humans and mutants live together in peace. It still takes place when the series ended which is why this new one is titled X-Men ‘97. The team will likely fight in Professor X’s honor. For fans who’ve been waiting decades now just to see what happens next, it’ll be especially exciting to see how things play out since the show is jumping directly into right where the classic came to an end.
Animation
The animation has clearly been updated, but it still looks to have the classic feel. It matches the aesthetic of the original series but is animated a bit smoother. As long as it feels close enough to the original, the slight updates shouldn’t be an issue. It still looks like a cartoon that climbed out of the 90s.

Daily Bugle with Spider-Man Mention
An issue of the Daily Bugle floats by in the wind. There’s a headline in the top corner of it mentioning Spider-Man. Could this be hinting at a Spider-Man appearance at some point? Spider-Man made a very brief cameo in the original series, and the X-Men were prominently featured in an episode of the 90’s Spider-Man animated series. It’s certainly possible to see him again since their shows were in the same universe. It would be especially cool if it led to his series also making a similar comeback.
Anti-Mutant Protests
The trailer shows that the anti-mutant protests are still occurring. As always, innocent mutants must fight for the right to just exist. Hopefully they do get to that point so they can live in the peaceful future they deserve. It’s nice to see the political themes are still present and that none of it has been toned down.
Cast of Returning Characters
The whole team is back! Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Beast, Jubilee, Rogue, Gambit, Forge, and Morph are all here and ready to continue their fight. They’re not the only ones returning though. It looks as though they’ll once again have to deal with the likes of the Sentinels and Magneto.
Jean Grey is Pregnant
One of the biggest reveals in the trailer is that Jean and Scott are having a baby. They have had quite a few kids in the comic books, so it makes one wonder who this will end up being. Could this be Nate or Rachel? Maybe It’ll be Emma. It could even be Cable (yes, Jean Grey wouldn’t be the mother in that scenario, but adaptations alter things frequently). Who knows, this could even be an all new character. Either way, they’re sure to be an especially powerful mutant.
Gambit Supercharging Wolverine
In what looks to be an epic action scene, Gambit hops on Wolverine’s back and uses his kinetic powers to supercharge Wolverine and his claws. Has this ever happened in X-Men media before? If not, how did it take long for this idea to be used? It’s one of the coolest things they could have done and it’ll probably prove to be an effective attack.

Magneto in Charge
In Charles Xavier’s will, he leaves everything to Magneto, his oldest friend. With Magneto now in charge, how will this change the dynamic on the X-Men team or with the relations between humans and mutants? It’s sure to add a lot of riveting drama to the series, and may even lead to some satisfying character development. This is definitely a conflict that will allow this series to stand out from the classic a bit.
