Godzilla and Kong duked it out in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, but now they’re set to fight side by side in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A new trailer for the latest kaiju flick dropped, so let’s take a look at all the gargantuan details it has to offer.

Titans vs. Great Apes

The trailer opens with backstory narration telling the audience that the Titans were the guardians of nature and the Great Apes were the protectors of humanity. Both of these roles fit what we’ve seen from Godzilla and Kong in the past respectively. It’s a quick explanation, but it gives a lot of context regarding how both have and can exist in this world.

Jia’s Visions

Jia has a vision that something big, and probably terrible, is coming. Kong and Godzilla can apparently sense it too. It’s likely a new kaju who will prove to be a threat to the whole planet. What’s especially interesting about her vision is that there’s a very quick glimpse of someone’s eye with a reflection of Mothra in it. Is Mothra being resurrected in some form? If so, it’ll be exciting to see one of the best monsters from Godzilla lore return to this franchise.

New and Returning Cast

There are both fresh and familiar faces among the cast of human characters. Dr. Ilene Andrews, conspiracy theorist Bernie Hayes, and Kong’s young human companion Jia are all returning from the previous film. New characters, like one played by Dan Stevens, are present, but not much is known about any of their roles. The characters previously played by Millie Bobby Brown, Alexander Skaarsgard, Julian Dennison, and Kyle Chandler and noticeably absent, though, which is rather unfortunate.

Baby Kong

There’s a baby Kong! Well, it’s a baby Great Ape, so it might not technically be his offspring, but they’re still absolutely adorable. It looks like Kong will go out of his way to protect this youngster, which sounds like a fun dynamic for the character that we haven’t quite seen before.

Skar King

It’s not just the baby Kong we see in this trailer. There are plenty of Great Apes, which is interesting because Kong was previously thought to be the last of his kind. They appear to be led by the big bad of the movie, the Skar King. The Skar King looks like a terrifying version of Kong and even wields a giant whip made out of bones. He’s sure to provide plenty of material for explosive and riveting action scenes.

Shimo

The trailer also provides the first look at another villainous Titan known as Shimo. Shimo is said to be an ancient ice Titan and will make her debut in this movie. Interestingly enough, Shimo was first alluded to in the Call of Duty collaboration with Godzilla vs. Kong. As exciting as it is to be getting new kaiju in this franchise, it’s a bit of a downer to not see some other fan-favorites from the classic Japanese movies. Hopefully the likes of Gigan and Biollante rear their heads in future MonsterVerse films.

Godzilla and Kong Working Together

Godzilla and Kong will be fighting on the same side throughout this movie, and the shot of them running side-by-side is enough to get any fan’s blood pumping. This is an Avengers-level teamup that moviegoers have been waiting for. Kong’s mechanized arm upgrade looks like it will be helpful in their fight against the Skar King and Shimo, but will it be enough for these giant heroes to come up on top? We’ll have to wait for the movie’s release to find out.
