Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem gave the world a fresh take on the heroes in a half shell and quickly became one of the most successful movies Nickelodeon has ever produced. With the animated film being so well-received by both fans and critics, it’s no surprise that a TV series that takes place in the same world was announced in addition to a sequel.
The teaser trailer for that show, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has been released. It’s a quick one, but it offers plenty of exciting details. Let’s take a look at what they are.
The Animation
The most immediate thing that stands out in the trailer is the series’ animation style. While the movie used 3D animation, this show will be using 2D animation instead. It’s an odd choice for something that will exist within the same canon, but it doesn’t seem like a bad one. The animation style, aesthetic, and character design all seem to be intact and all match what was seen in the film. Plus, despite being different, it still looks fantastic.
The Turtles’ Bandanas
SPOILERS FOR Mutant Mayhem: The end of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has the Turtles leave their bandanas in the sewer so that they can attend high school alongside humans. Here, however, they don their iconic colored bandanas once again. Perhaps they’ll just be wearing them to fight crime, like Batman putting on his cape and cowl.
The Turtles are Loved by the Public
The trailer shows how much the Turtles are now loved by the public since saving New York City in the movie. It’s nice to see this major detail unique to this version fully embraced by the creators as the franchise progresses. This will surely lead to new and different stories that still feel accurate to the material. That being said, it looks like the fame may go to their heads a bit which could lead to them slipping up during their hero work.

Villainous Robots
Looks like the Turtles are taking on some evil robots this time around. They’re each numbered, so we know it’s not just one and that they’ll keep coming. The big question is who’s making them. Could this be the work of Baxter Stockman who’s still alive? Are they sent by Cynthia Utrom to extract more DNA out of the Turtles? Perhaps they’re scouts sent by the Shredder. They could have been made and sent by someone we haven’t met at all yet, like the Triceraton. If it is someone else, why are they sending them after the Turtles?
Voice Cast
The Turtles sound like they all have the same voice actors as they did in the movie. This is nice, as animated series that tie into theatrically released movies don’t always have the same voice cast. It does make one wonder, though, if other stars like John Cena or Seth Rogen will return as well. We see glimpses of April O’Neil and Master Splinter in the trailer, but will they be voiced by Ayo Edebiri and Jackie Chan or other voice actors who sound similar to them? This is just a teaser trailer, so perhaps we’ll know more information closer to the release of the series.
Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be streaming on Paramount+ this summer.
