Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a sci-fi comedy film from 1964 that focuses on a group of Martians as they travel to Earth to kidnap Santa Claus to bring joy to Martian children. It’s a pretty wacky movie and has become a staple of bad movie nights for a lot of people, especially around Christmas time. Obviously, not everything needs to be remade, but this wild flick is a perfect example of something that could benefit from it.
The movie’s premise is actually a fun idea. Martians wanting to capture Santa Claus to bring him back to Mars so that their own children can experience the holiday cheer is pretty hilarious. It could definitely work as an animated film that’s geared toward a younger audience. Whether they succeed in capturing the real Santa Claus or they search the Earth only to realize he doesn’t even exist and that it’s all just an idea worth believing in, this could lead to big laughs.

There are plenty of moments throughout the film that are incredibly wacky. Some would be fun to see done in a modern, well-made movie, like kids using Santa’s toys to battle a villainous Martian. There are others that feel like missed opportunities. For instance, the original movie has a polar bear and a robot show up; both of which look hilariously terrible and end up not really doing anything. A remake could actually give them a purpose. Perhaps they could even duke it out, creating something even crazier.
Of course, the original is tons of fun to watch as is. There are many folks who wouldn’t want anything to be changed about this bizarre holiday classic, which is completely justified. Plus, the movie world certainly doesn’t need more remakes and could use original ideas. That being said, this is a truly unique idea that could be handled differently. Besides, it wouldn’t erase the classic film, which is still watched today, from existence.

It’s been roughly sixty years. It’s beyond time to give this bonkers sci-fi comedy flick another go.
