Not Wanting More Video Game Adaptations is a Weird Complaint

A common complaint seen in the comments on social media posts and under movie trailers on YouTube is folks expressing their disinterest in more video game adaptations. They say that there’s too many nowadays and that they want more original films. While not enjoying movies based on video games is a valid opinion, this is still a pretty weird complaint to have.

Of course, original movies are always welcome. That being said, movies have been based on source material. The Wizard of Oz, The Godfather, Jurassic Park, Gone With the Wind, and countless other movies are based on books. Other movies like Annie, Twelve Angry Men, and A Few Good Men are based on stage plays. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with most other blockbusters nowadays, is based on comic books. There have been films based on podcasts, old TV series, real-life events, and even board games. For some reason, though, these people draw the line at movies based on video games.

Obviously, there are movies that exist that aren’t based on any sort of source material. They were created using a completely original script rather than adapting existing works. Films like this, such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, can be just as great as even some of the best adaptations like The Lord of the Rings. Hollywood could definitely use more originality, but let’s not pretend that movies have always been original and that adaptations can’t be great.

It’s also worth noting that, while video game adaptations are being made more now than ever, they’ve been around for decades. Super Mario Bros. came out in 1993, which wasn’t super long after it became the norm to have video games in your home. Video game adaptations never stopped being made and are suddenly a new thing again, either. They were just never as good as they are now (with a couple exceptions). Any media can and has been adapted into movies; video games are just a more recent medium than novels.

Why wouldn’t movie and TV studios want to adapt video games? It’s one of the largest entertainment industries out there with hundreds of thousands of fans. Providing that community with films they would enjoy is a sure success. Where Sonic the Hedgehog, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Five Nights at Freddy’s have all been financially successful and TV shows like The Last of Us have been so well received, it only makes sense to get more video game adaptations.

If, say, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and Max Payne were the only video game adaptations, then these complaints wouldn’t seem so odd. As long as these movies and TV shows are done well, then why not get excited for more of them? For over a decade, comic book adaptations were all the rage after taking a long time to find their footing, and now that’s beginning to happen with video game adaptations. As a gamer and a movie fan, there’s certainly nothing to complain about with that.
