Themes ‘American Horror Story’ Has Yet To Cover

American Horror Story has been on the air for nearly a dozen seasons, each covering a different theme. With seasons about murder houses, spooky asylums, circus freak shows, vampire-filled hotels, witch covens, and more, it certainly seems like they’re planning to touch on every horror theme imaginable. However, there are still some themes they have yet to cover. Here are just some of those themes that could make for fun seasons of American Horror Story.

Ghost Ship

Stories of ghost ships have been around for quite a long time. The tale of the Flying Dutchman told by real-life sailors, MS. Found in a Bottle by Edgar Allen Poe, episodes of Scooby-Doo, and the video game The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan are just some examples of stories revolving around spooky ghost ships. There’s something about the paranormal blending with the claustrophobia of being stuck on a ship in the middle of the ocean that is truly terrifying. It would be interesting to see what sort of spin Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk would put on this classic horror theme. Characters stuck together in the tight quarters of a seafaring vessel as some entity haunts them could lead to entertaining drama and scary frights.

Space Station

With the likes of Alien and Dead Space, there’s something that’s especially creepy about horror stories taking place on space stations. Like the idea behind the ghost ship theme, being stuck on a space station is claustrophobic, which can lead to a creative form of horror. Whether the folks onboard are being hunted down by aliens, mutants, serial killers, ghosts, or some odd combination, there’s the opportunity to make the situation unique by being stuck up in space. Perhaps the space station itself starts failing at one point, adding to the panic. The series has touched on aliens a couple of times now, but has yet to actually be set in space.

Halloween Night

The night of Halloween can lead to a lot of spooky or mysterious things happening. It’s a little strange that more horror stories don’t take place on, or leading up to, Halloween. There are some movies, like Hocus Pocus, Trick ‘r Treat, Monster House, and of course Halloween, that all prove that it’s the scariest night of the year and just about anything can happen. Witches are more powerful, monsters are free to roam, ghosts come out, and you never know who’s under any mask. Sure, there have been single episodes of American Horror Story that have taken place on Halloween, but there hasn’t been a season that’s actually about Halloween itself and the evils it can hold. Characters preparing for Halloween fun all week just to be met with real terrors could make for an interesting 10-episode season.

Cosmic / Lovecraftian

When the first half of American Horror Story: Double Feature was set in New England and was just about vampires, it was a missed opportunity. A season set in Boston in the 1920s could lead to some twisted Lovecraftian fun. A selection of Lovecraft’s scariest stories could all come together with American Horror Story’s usual drama to make something quite unique. Townsfolk could be gradually replaced by fish people. A group could secretly be worshiping the Necronomicon. A strange, unfathomable being could be lurking in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Cosmic horror is a niche subgenre, and Murphy and Falchuk could potentially do some intriguing things with it.

Amusement Park

There are plenty of real life tragedies that have happened in amusement parks. Rides have crashed or failed and caused lives to be lost. Some people are just afraid of certain rides in general. Because of this, amusement parks can be seen as a real-life horror for many people. Them being seen as fun to most puts a bit of a twisted spin on it as well. Let’s not forget the spooky rumors around some, like secret underground tunnels or former owners having their brains frozen and hidden on the premises. There’s a lot to pull from for an amusement park themed season of American Horror Story.

Cryptids

With Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Mothman, Skinwalkers, and many other cryptids out there with plenty of folks who believe they’re real, it’s surprising that American Horror Story hasn’t made any attempt to create stories around them. These beasts are terrifying and have haunted the nightmares of those who’ve heard stories of them for years. Plus, where these tales have come from American folklore, a season focused on them would truly be an American horror story.

Werewolves

The TV series has touched on vampires, ghosts, aliens, apocalypse mutants, killer clowns, and various other popular monsters. However, they’ve somehow avoided using werewolves in any of their seasons so far. The classic creature has been used in countless horror movies and TV series and is a staple of the horror genre but is nowhere to be seen in American Horror Story. Perhaps it’s time that changes.
